Mastering Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) in Early Childhood Classrooms

It focuses on nurturing young children's ability to understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Through intentional activities and supportive environments, early childhood educators play a critical role in developing children's emotional intelligence and social skills, laying the foundation for lifelong learning, well-being, and success.

 Course Outline:

Week 1: Foundations of Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL)

  • What is SEL and Why It’s Critical (especially in Nepal's early childhood landscape)?
  • 5 Key Areas of SEL: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Responsible Decision-Making.
  • Recognizing Emotional Needs vs Behavioral Problems.

🛠️ Activity: Emotional Mapping - "Getting to Know My Students" practical exercise.


Week 2: Building SEL into Daily Classroom Life

  • Morning Meetings, Calm Corners, Gratitude Circles: Easy SEL routines for every preschool.
  • Using Stories, Music, and Play to Teach Empathy and Kindness.
  • Helping Children Handle Big Emotions (anger, sadness, fear).

🛠️ Activity: Create your own "SEL Storytime" toolkit + role-playing conflict resolution.


Week 3: Empowering Teachers as Emotional Leaders

  • Teacher Self-Awareness and Emotional Regulation.
  • Mindful Communication with Children, Parents, and Colleagues.
  • Creating a Collaborative SEL Culture (whole school approach).

🛠️ Activity: Build your "Teacher Emotional Resilience Plan."

  • Micro SEL Project (eg. design a week's SEL plan for your classroom)
