Young children often experience intense emotions that their developing brains are not yet able to process.
In the early years, the emotional part of the brain develops faster than the thinking and reasoning part of the brain. This means that young children are still learning important skills such as self-regulation, self-control, patience, and emotional expression.
A small situation may appear unimportant to an adult, but to a young child, it can feel overwhelming.
A broken toy, waiting for a turn, being told “no,” or separating from a parent may feel as serious to them as a major problem feels to an adult.
Tantrums are not simply bad behaviour.
Tantrums are a normal developmental milestone and an important part of a child’s emotional growth.
An emotional outburst is often a window into what the child is experiencing. During these moments, children are not trying to make adults uncomfortable. They are often asking for help in the only way they currently know.
When a child is having an emotional outburst, they may be trying to communicate:
“Mom, Dad, or Teacher, I am having feelings that I do not know how to manage. I need your help.”
Children’s problems may look small to adults, but they feel very real and very big to the child.
Positive handling means responding to children with calmness, empathy, connection, and clear boundaries.
Instead of focusing only on stopping the behaviour, adults learn to understand what the behaviour is communicating.
Children need adults who can:
Stay calm during emotional outbursts
Recognize the need behind the behaviour
Validate the child’s feelings
Set safe and respectful boundaries
Help children name their emotions
Model healthy ways to manage frustration
Support children without shaming, threatening, or punishing them
When children repeatedly experience calm and supportive responses, they gradually learn how to regulate their emotions independently.
Preschool children do not always have the language, attention span, or emotional readiness to understand detailed explanations.
Sometimes they need stories, pictures, play, and books that help them recognize what they are feeling.
Books give children’s feelings a shape, a name, and a safe place without forcing them to speak before they are ready.
Through stories, children can see characters experiencing anger, sadness, fear, disappointment, or frustration. This helps them understand that their emotions are normal and manageable.
Many behaviours begin to settle not because adults correct the child, but because the child finally feels understood.
Books can help create that understanding.
This course will help parents, teachers, caregivers, and early childhood professionals understand:
How the emotional brain develops in the early years
Why young children experience intense emotions
Why the thinking brain becomes less available during a tantrum
The difference between misbehaviour and emotional dysregulation
Why tantrums are a developmental milestone
What children are communicating through challenging behaviour
How to respond calmly during emotional outbursts
How to validate feelings without accepting unsafe behaviour
How to use positive handling language
How to support children through anger, crying, hitting, screaming, and frustration
How to use books and stories to develop emotional understanding
How to build self-regulation gradually through daily interactions
How to create emotionally safe spaces at home and in the classroom
This course is suitable for:
Parents
Preschool teachers
Primary-level educators
Caregivers
School leaders
Child development professionals
Parenting coaches
Anyone working closely with young children
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the brain development behind emotional outbursts
Identify the emotional need behind challenging behaviour
Respond to tantrums with confidence and calmness
Use respectful and positive language with children
Help children name and understand their emotions
Maintain boundaries without punishment or shame
Use books, stories, visuals, and practical strategies to support emotional development
Build stronger and more secure relationships with children
Children are not giving you a hard time.
They are having a hard time.
When adults respond with understanding, connection, and appropriate boundaries, children feel safe enough to learn.
Emotional regulation is not taught through punishment. It develops through repeated experiences of co-regulation, empathy, modelling, and positive support.
Help children feel understood before expecting them to manage what they are still learning to understand.
