Vygotsky Child-Parent Consulting and Learning Center hosted an insightful session on “Shaping Young Minds: The Role of Parenting in Early Childhood”, facilitated by Ms. Priyanka Chaguthi, Parenting Coach, Early Years Educator, Teacher Trainer, and Founder of Vygotsky Nepal.
The session focused on the important role parents and caregivers play in shaping children's emotional, social, cognitive, and behavioural development during the early years.
Early childhood is a crucial period of development. During these years, children develop important foundations for learning, communication, relationships, emotional regulation, confidence, and social interaction.
Parents and caregivers are among the most influential people in a young child's life. Everyday interactions, communication, routines, responses, and relationships can contribute to the environment in which children learn and develop.
The session encouraged parents to view parenting not simply as managing children's behaviour, but as an opportunity to understand, connect with, guide, and support the developing child.
During the session, Ms. Priyanka Chaguthi explored several important aspects of parenting and early childhood development, including:
Understanding children's developmental needs
The importance of early childhood experiences
How parenting influences children's emotional development
Building secure and meaningful parent-child relationships
Understanding children's emotions and behaviour
Supporting children's emotional regulation
Positive communication with young children
Creating a safe and nurturing home environment
Encouraging children's confidence and independence
Setting appropriate boundaries with warmth and consistency
Supporting children's social and emotional development
The importance of responsive and mindful parenting
Young children may not always have the vocabulary or emotional skills to explain what they are experiencing. As a result, their feelings and needs can sometimes appear through their behaviour.
The session encouraged parents to look beyond the behaviour and ask:
“What might my child be trying to communicate?”
Understanding the developmental and emotional needs behind behaviour can help parents respond more thoughtfully and support children in developing healthy emotional and social skills.
Strong parent-child relationships are built through everyday moments of connection, communication, trust, play, listening, and emotional availability.
Parents were encouraged to create opportunities for meaningful connection with their children and to recognize that small, consistent interactions can become important parts of a child's early development.
There is no single approach that works for every child or every family. Children have different personalities, developmental stages, experiences, strengths, and needs.
Effective parenting involves continuously learning about the child, reflecting on one's own responses, and adapting approaches according to the child's developmental and emotional needs.
The session provided parents and caregivers with an opportunity to reflect on their parenting practices and explore ways to create more supportive and nurturing relationships with young children.

The “Shaping Young Minds: The Role of Parenting in Early Childhood” session highlighted an important message: children's early experiences are shaped through relationships and everyday interactions with the adults around them.
By understanding children's needs, communicating with them respectfully, providing appropriate boundaries, and building strong connections, parents and caregivers can create supportive environments for children to learn, grow, and develop.
